ABOUT WACRAD

Word Alive Commission for Relief and Development (WACRAD) is a development arm of Word Alive Ministries International (WAMI), aLocal church in Malawi with its head office in Blantyre. The arm which started as an HIV & AIDS initiative in 1992 has now grown into a full relief and development program.

WACRAD is therefore an extension of the church in fulfilling the Lord’s command with reference to James 1:27 and Matthew 25:34-46.

From just offering counseling services to patients admitted at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH), WACRAD now provides Behavioral Change Interventions (BCI), Home Based Care/Orphan and Vulnerable Children (HBC/OVC), HIV Testing and Counseling (HTC), Relief and Food Security
interventions. As a church arm, WACRAD mainstreams spiritual interventions in all its programs.

WACRAD now operates in three districts namely Blantyre, Thyolo and Lilongwe. The program works with a qualified and dedicated team of Christian professionals, partnering with community volunteers.

Currently the commission is being funded by four donors and members of the church.

Furthermore, Word Alive Church is running a number of Income Generating Activities (IGAs) such as piggery, poultry and natural water bottling (Mkokomo) which is intended to supplement donor and membership support.

WHAT WE DO

Behaviour Change Intervention
This project targets in and out of school youth. It promotes abstinence as the only sure way to prevent HIV infection among the youth. The project works with teachers, community leaders and parents to instill values that reinforce positive behavioral change among the youth.

Home Based Care & Care for Orphans and Vulnerable Children
Clients with varying chronic clinical conditions access care and support services through the project such as treatment of opportunistic infections, basic nursing care, health education and HIV Counseling, domestic support, nutrition, psycho social and spiritual support.

The project also reaches out to orphans and other vulnerable children with psycho-social, spiritual, nutritional, economic and educational support. It also facilitates provision of learning
structures and safe water for under five children.

HIV Testing and Counseling
The Project partnered with three government institutions to integrate HTC services in health service delivery. It therefore operates at South Lunzu Health Centre and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, Mitundu Community Hospital in Lilongwe and in the area of Traditional Authority Nkhumba in Phalombe district where clients are tested for HIV.

Food Security and Relief
Began as an improved sustainable livelihoods interventions mainstreamed in HIV and AIDS programs. WACRAD has now established a full food security and relief project targeting the wider population including PLWHIV. As a livelihood interventions WACRAD has distributed goats, food
items, and farm inputs to the most vulnerable households. WACRAD aims to ensure adequate food supply through various relief and food security interventions once this becomes a fully
fledged department.

Spiritual Significance
Spiritual Counseling is a key component of all WACRAD interventions. It allows clients and/or beneficiaries to access spiritual counseling wothout impositon. It also does not force them to become Word Alive Church members. Instead it refers them to other spiritual institutions for further support. The intervention emphasizes on the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ which embraces among others people living with HIV.

Development programs in the pipeline
WACRAD has established a Centre for Transformation and Empowerment (CFTE) which is a socio-economic intervention. The Centre, though not fully operational, aims to build the capacity of communities through the provision of vocational skills, recreation facilities, and temporary shelter for survivors of gender based violence.
